The 2023 Porsche 911 is widely regarded as being the emperor of supercars, as few of its rivals can match its magnificent appearance, marvelous speed and meticulous engineering. But how does it compare to the 2023 McLaren GT, a super car with F1 level performance and daily drivability?
Design & Style
The “GT” in McLaren stands for “Grand Touring” and the car certainly lives up to this pedigree. It shares a number of mechanical similarities with the 600LT, a car which has been discontinued, but focuses more on daily handling. Its cabin is more spacious than the McLaren Artura or 720S, yet it can still only seat two passengers. The Porsche 911 comes with all-wheel drive and the ability to seat up to four passengers, a rarity for super cars that usually seat no more than two. It retains the timeless teardrop shape that the brand has become famous for, and its latest update for this year is the Sport Classic limited edition, that has a manual seven speed transmission.
Technology & Safety
Porsche takes driver assistance seriously, and has implemented numerous features into the 911, including night vision, emergency automated brakes, adapted cruise control and lane departure notifications. Perks within its cabin include satellite radio, wifi, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, and a Burmester audio system with climate control.
The McLaren GT offers zero driver assistance, despite its quarter of a million dollar price tag. You can forget about blind area monitoring, frontal impact alerts or adapted cruise control, but they did throw in a backup camera. Perks within its cabin consist of a twelve speaker audio system from Bowers & Wilkins, satellite radio, navigation system, seven inch touch display and leather upholstery.
Performance
The McLaren GT is outfitted with a V8, four liter engine that is dual turbocharged and capable of generating 612 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in around 2.8 seconds with a top speed of 203 mph. The Porsche 911 Turbo is powered by a flat six, 3.7 liter engine that can generate 640 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in 2.6 seconds with a top speed of 205 mph.
The Bottom Line
The Porsche 911 seats twice as many passengers as the McLaren GT while offering superior horsepower, acceleration and top speed. And considering that McLaren didn’t bother to include any driver assistance into the GT and it has stiffer seats that will discourage extended trips, this definitely makes the Porsche 911 the winner.
