The Tesla Model S has been a game-changing car. It’s the first mass-market electric vehicle, and it sits in the top three spots on Road & Track’s list of best cars ever made. But now that Porsche is about to enter the EV fray with its Taycan sedan (pronounced tie-can), what does that mean for Tesla? Will Porsche be able to give Elon Musk’s creation some competition? Well…maybe! And so we thought we’d do a comparison between these two cars and see how they stack up against each other (beyond their similar names).
Design & Style
When it comes to the exterior design, these two vehicles look very similar. Both have sharp lines and a streamlined shape that make them look like they’re going fast even when they’re standing still. They also both have aerodynamic features like air dams on their front bumpers, which help create extra downforce to keep you stuck to the road in high-speed driving conditions.
The 2022 Taycan has a more aggressive overall presence than Tesla’s Model S thanks to its larger grille and front bumper, but otherwise they’re pretty comparable in terms of style.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan is a true luxury car, with a minimalist interior design and plenty of high-quality leather. The 2022 Tesla Model S has a much more futuristic look; it has one sweeping dashboard that stretches across the entire length of the car. It’s not quite as luxurious as the Taycan, but it does have some unique features like power seats that can move up and down automatically depending on whether or not you’re driving into tunnels.
This one’s up to personal preference: if you like to be surrounded by lots of leather and wood accents, then go for the Taycan; if you prefer sleek lines and a futuristic feel (and don’t mind losing out on some comfort), then go for the Model X.
Technology & Safety
When it comes to technology and safety, both the 2022 Porsche Taycan and 2022 Tesla Model S are pretty well equipped. However, there are some important differences between them that we want to highlight here.
First off, the 2022 Porsche Taycan is fitted with radar sensors mounted on its front bumper that provide supplemental information to the built-in camera system and help you detect other vehicles around you. Meanwhile, the 2022 Tesla Model S has a system called Autopilot which can keep in its lane on highways and automatically brake when needed; however, this feature isn’t available in all markets yet (it’s currently only available in North America).
The 2022 Porsche Taycan also has an optional head-up display (HUD) which projects relevant information like speed onto your windshield so you don’t have to look down at your instrument panel while driving. Meanwhile, no such HUD exists on any model year of Tesla Model S sedan yet. However, there may be one coming soon as CEO Elon Musk has stated publicly that he plans on offering it as an option!
Performance
The Tesla Model S has a 335 kWh battery with a range of up to 400 miles. It also has an all-wheel drive system, which is quite useful if you’re driving in inclement weather. The Porsche Taycan has a smaller battery than the Tesla Model S at about 280 kWh, but it still holds up well against its competition by offering a range of over 500 miles per charge.
The Tesla Model S has two electric motors that generate 763 horsepower and 719 lb-ft of torque while accelerating to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and topping out at 155 mph (200 km/h). The Porsche Taycan matches it largely by having dual electric motors for 592 hp and 687 lb-ft worth of torque that reaches 60 mph in 3 seconds flat with top speed limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
The Bottom Line
