2022 Porsche Panamera vs. 2022 McLaren 720S

The 2022 Porsche Panamera is one of the most beautiful hatchbacks we’ve ever seen, with state of the art automotive tech and magnificent performance. But can it beat the 2022 McLaren 720S, a car which has received acclaim for its fabulous appearance, endless acceleration and extremely high price tag?

Design & Style

The McLaren 720S is so expensive that it exceeds the cost of many American single family homes, which means it can only be afforded by the rich and famous. It has a futuristic exterior which can best be described as a perfect blend between sharp edges and smooth curves. Like most super cars, it only seats two passengers and can be purchased in the form of a convertible or coupe.

The Porsche Panamera is a supercar with the ability to seat four passengers without compromising its acceleration and speed, which is a masterstroke of engineering that cannot be overstated. While most models use a V6 engine that is turbocharged, buyers also get the option of a dual turbo V8 and a hybrid plugin. It sits on twenty one inch wheels, has a stunning satin based finish and enhanced infotainment.

Technology & Safety

Unlike most super car manufacturers who largely ignore driver assistance, Porsche has wisely implemented it in all its vehicles, and is one of the earliest manufacturers to do so. To that end, the Panamera comes with features such as night vision, emergency automatic brakes, frontal collision alerts, adapted cruise control, and notifications for cross traffic in the rear with blind area monitoring. Comforts inside its cabin include wifi, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, twelve inch touch displays, massage leather seats that can be cooled or heated, and four zone climate control.

Despite costing over a quarter of a million dollars, the McLaren 720S has no traditional driver assistance whatsoever. The only thing that buyers will get is parking sensors and a frontal ended lift system. That’s it. Comforts within its cabin include seven inch touch displays, Bluetooth, an audio system with two speakers and dual USB ports.

Performance

This is where McLaren shines the brightest. The McLaren 720S convertible and coupe are both powered by a dual turbocharged V8 that can generate 710 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in just 3 seconds. Those that purchase the Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid will get an engine capable of generating 552 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in 3.2 seconds.

The Bottom Line

Despite having a slight advantage in horsepower and top speed, the McLaren 720S fails in every other area. The Panamera seats twice as many passengers, has driver assistance, larger touch displays and superior fuel economy. Furthermore, the McLaren 720S only offers 12.69 cubic feet for cargo space, while the Panamera offers 47.3 cubic feet, which makes it the winner.
