2018 Porsche Panamera vs. 2018 Mercedes-Benz S Class

Owners of the 2018 Porsche Panamera will undoubtedly appreciate its beautiful interior, wide range of engine choices, and its enviable composure. But, owners of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S Class are exceptionally proud of its attention to the finest details, first class seating experience, and smooth, forceful powertrains. This comparison should be interesting. And while both carry a pretty hefty price tag, with the names Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, you know you get what you pay for.

Design & Style

Though the Mercedes-Benz S Class has five seats versus the Porsche Panamera’s four seats, the Porsche makes up for it with more cargo volume (17.6 ft.³ to the Mercedes 16.3 ft.³).

For the convenience, comfort, and enjoyment of their owners, both vehicles have the following standard features: passenger power seats, driver power seats, power door locks, power windows, radio, CD player, air conditioning, leather seats, and sunroof.

Technically, this Mercedes-Benz borrows 2014’s design. There are, however, numerous new updates and three engines to choose from this year. Compared to last year’s model, it looks very much the same with some minor elaborations.

The design of the 2018 Porsche Panamera definitely turned some heads. It’s luxury-oriented features have been redesigned from last year’s, more cargo room has been added, and yet it remains an undeniably sporty drive.

Technology & Safety

Standard safety features in both of these vehicles include curtain airbags, rear side airbags, front side airbags, passenger airbag, driver airbag, and ABS brakes.

For those interested, add-on safety features that may be worth discussing with your dealer are as follows: blind spot monitoring, active lane control, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning.

Autonomous driving systems are not available yet for every car on the market, but many vehicles this year are jumping on board.

Performance

The eight-speed automatic Porsche Panamera contains a six-cylinder gasoline engine with a tank that is capable of holding 23.7 gallons. On the highway, it gets 27 miles per gallon and on city streets, 21 miles per gallon.

The nine-speed automatic Mercedes-Benz S class features and eight-cylinder gasoline engine with a tank that holds slightly less at 23 gallons. With those eight cylinders, the miles per gallon will be less as well: 25 miles per gallon on the highway and only 16 miles per gallon in the city.

There are reports from those who have test driven or own the Mercedes-Benz that the hybrid drives heavy. Other reports have stated that the Mercedes-Benz S class’ steering lacks feedback. Both vehicles (the Mercedes-Benz and the Porsche) have rack and pinion steering with a turning diameter of 39 feet curb to curb.

The Bottom Line

It appears that these vehicles are pretty evenly matched with give and take in a number of areas. Both have improved on designs in the past, offer very similar standard safety features, and have lots of comfort and convenience bonuses included as standard. Since the Porsche offers so many engine choices, however, those who appreciate having options may well favor the Panamera.
