Two of the most compelling choices today for sedans that have all the bells and whistles we’ve grown to love, but still exude maximum beauty, are the 2018 Audi A7 and the 2018 Porsche Panamera. And where their similarities are many, they have enough differences to make one of them a tad more desirable than the other. Of course, it’s also a matter of taste. Let’s compare.
Design & Style
One example of the Porsche’s superior design is the passenger compartment in which, more or less, it sets the standard. With a nice balance between luxury and innovation, the Audi A7 tries to hold its own. But even with a pleasant design involving the infotainment center (the Panamera has a larger display by about 4 inches), the Audi falls a little short.
The interior of the Porsche Panamera is comfortable and surprisingly roomy. Power adjustability, heat, and partial leather are standard. Upgrades like power rear sunshades, adjustable eight-way rear seats, heated steering wheel, and full leather are available.
The Audi A7 is no slouch which when it comes to the interior, however. The dials and steering wheel have a pleasurable touch and the design, overall, is thoughtful. The front seats are power adjustable, heated, and leather.
Technology & Safety
The list of standard safety features in both of these vehicles are absolutely identical and include the following: lane departure warning, auto leveling headlights, blind spot monitoring, traction control, adjustable pedals, integrated turn signal mirrors, night vision, auto on headlights, curtain airbags, front side airbags, passenger airbag, driver airbag, and brake assist.
There is no shortage of technology on either of these vehicles, both sporting the following examples of high tech advantages: rear and front parking sensors, satellite radio, HD radio, infotainment center, USB ports, Bluetooth, and zoned climate control.
The mileage on both cars is far too close to call, only differing by about one mile per gallon. Both the Audi A7 and the Porsche Panamera offer approximately 28 MPG highway and 21 MPG city. That said, the Porsche Panamera has a gas tank that holds 23.7 gallons, while the Audi A7 holds considerably less at 19.8 gallons.
Both vehicles operate through rack and pinion steering and the horsepower/RPMs is relatively close, as well. With 340 horsepower at 5300 RPMs, the Audi barely edges out the Porsche on horsepower which has 330 horsepower at 5400 RPMs. The Porsche Panamera has a twin turbo premium unleaded V6 engine while the Audi A7 has an intercooled supercharger premium unleaded V6.
The Bottom Line
The Panamera is obviously worthy of its vaunted Porsche badge. But the Audi A7 is, without a doubt, a complete luxury midsize. The Porsche is beautiful inside, offers a wide range of engines, and exhibits enviable composure, making it a superior automobile. The Audi, after all, isn’t as roomy as its classification suggests (as a hatchback), has limited steering feedback, and it’s a bit cramped in the rear seat.
As far as performance is concerned, critics have rated the Porsche as a definite winner.
