2018 Porsche Macan vs. 2018 BMW X3

Owners of the 2018 Porsche Macan and owners of the BMW X3 could go back and forth all day as to which automobile is better. Loyal fans of both are hard-pressed to stray from their preferred brand.

Design & Style

The Porsche company cares about not only the safety of their devotees but convenience and comfort when it comes to the drivers and passengers in their cars. Standard in the Macan but not the X3 are height adjustable front seat shoulder belts. This allows passengers of varying heights to comfortably be secured by this most important of safety features.

So impressive is the interior on the Macan that Porsche decided to offer it in a number of color options and materials. Example: genuine leather (for a more striking, harsher appeal) or Seats Alcantara (a material that is suede-like and long-lasting – an aesthetics softener). Available color pallets for the genuine leather are agate gray, espresso, or black; and color options that are two-tone which include beige and brown, beige and black, to shades of gray, and black and red. Alcantara colors include black, gray, and beige/black.

Technology & Safety

Both the BMW X3 and Porsche Macan contain standard safety features such as the following: rearview cameras, daytime running lights, post collision automatic braking systems, skid prevention electronic stability systems, traction control, all-wheel-drive, four-wheel antilock brakes, plastic fuel tanks, side impact head airbags, front passenger and driver knee airbags, front side impact airbags, and passenger and driver frontal airbags.

As an enhanced safety feature, the Porsche Macan has rear as well as front seat shoulder belts pre-tensioners. This eliminates dangerous slack should a collision occur by tightening the seatbelts. It also limits the amount of pressure exerted by the belts on passengers. Rear seat belt pre-tensioners are not offered in the BMW X3.

Let’s take a look at some statistics regarding fuel economy: the X3’s 3.0 turbo six-cylinder eight speed automatic gets 27 MPG highway and 20 MPG city; whereas the Macan’s 3.0 twin turbo V6 automatic gets 23 MPG highway and 17 MPG city. The difference is minimal.

Also minimally different are the braking distances: when braking/decelerating from 60 to 0 mph, the Macan took 130 feet, while the X3 took 128 feet.

The Bottom Line

With the Porsche Macan’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, steel spring suspension, and sharp contoured body lines, it is hard to resist. It is the ideal combination of sophistication and sport, and the perfect ratio of a beast to beauty.

From its high-class choices of interior colors and materials to its available sound package featuring Bose surround sound, one can hardly help choosing the Macan over the BMW X3. If you still have doubts, you may just have to check them out for yourself, up close and personal.
