The 2018 Porsche Cayenne is coveted for its dynamic engine, smooth handling, array of options, and outstanding hybrid performance. But it faces off against the 2018 Mercedes Benz GLS, an SUV highly regarded for its spaciousness, luxurious cabin, extensive safety tech and flexibility. Which one is the better buy?
Design & Style
The Mercedes Benz GLS has an exterior which is angular and rugged, the very opposite of the Porsche Cayenne. It is a throwback to previous editions, which many people love. The grille has been widened, with horizontal bars in front that are thick, with LED lights. The trim will differ depending on the variant, but the interior features fresh gauges, an updated steering wheel, and binnacle. The instrument panel is completely digitized. The Porsche Cayenne has a smooth, circular shape with a hood and cabin that is extended. Within the interior, the dashboard is also adorned with a display that is digitized. The surfaces within the interior are curved, with an analog styled clock and instrument panel that has vents which are sculpted. The interior upholstery and trim is premium grade.
Technology & Safety
The Porsche Cayenne comes with lots of airbags, but this only scratches the surface of its many safety capabilities. It also has forward crash warnings, notifications for lane departures, headlights which are adaptive, and a camera that is surround view. Within the cabin, passengers will enjoy touch screens with seven inches, seats which can be power adjusted, multi-zone climate control and Apple CarPlay. Those driving the Mercedes Benz GLS will be protected by highly advanced systems for traction control, all-wheel drive, front collision warnings, a camera in the rearview, automated emergency brakes and systems which monitors driver attention. Within the cabin the Mercedes GLS is packed with all sorts of opulent gadgetry such as remote start, COMAND infotainment, screens which are 8.4 inches, cooled/heated seats, sunroof, and a center differential that locks.
Performance
The Mercedes GLS pulls no punches when it comes to power. It comes with a V6 engine that is twin turbo and capable of producing 362 horsepower with an automatic nine speed. The Porsche Cayenne also comes with a standard V6 engine, that is 3.6 liters and able to produce 300 horsepower with 295 pounds of torque.
The Bottom Line
The Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes Benz GLS are opposite in design but similar in their engine preferences and technology. Unfortunately for the Mercedes, its switchgear is a bit dated, the COMAND infotainment system is a real pain to use, and the diesel option was removed, which annoyed many people, so the Porsche Cayenne wins.
