For many, owning and driving a supercar is nothing more than a daydream. But, thanks to the 2018 Porsche 911 and the 2018 Audi R8, cars that are not only one of the final choices in the spectrum of exotic cars but also more affordable, dreams can come true. As well as being extremely livable cars, they both feature head-turning looks and offer thrilling performance.
Design & Style
The Porsche company takes the Audi company down a notch in this head to head comparison when it comes to seat comfort. In the 911, the front seats are designed to support driver and passenger even through the tightest turns; yet they remain extremely comfortable. And even with the pair of rear seats, there is a larger cabin. An added benefit of the back seats is that they fold down to increase the cargo space from 5 ft.³ to 9 ft.³.
Relatively comfortable adjustable bucket seats are featured in the Audi R8; but in order to treat yourself to authentic racing seats, you have to upgrade to the R8 V10 Plus. Cargo space on the R8 is 8 ft.³ thanks to the front trunk. This “frunk”, as it is referred to, comes courtesy of Audi’s design with the engine behind the driver.
Technology & Safety
You have to love the technology being applied to automobiles today. From start to finish, they practically drive themselves. The Audi R8 has mastered ergonomics and driver controls through technology. The Audio Virtual Cockpit, though appearing minimalist at first, is jampacked with technology. Various levels of customization are available on its fully digital instrument panel including an infotainment center upon which you can project the navigation.
But don’t be fooled by the Porsche 911 cockpit’s traditional appearance. It is also filled to the brim with technology. Various menus can be accessed by an instrument panel dial that controls a digital screen. And whereas Audi had to update their infotainment center this year in order to keep up, Porsche had already done so and simply carried their changes over into 2018.
At first comparison, the Audi R8’s V-10, 610 hp engine (which offers a top speed of 205 mph and a 3.2-second acceleration from 0 to 60) seems like it’s going to blow the Porsche 911’s engine out of the water. The 911 has a 3.0 L six-cylinder turbocharged engine with 370 hp. But here comes the deal breaker: the 911 offers over 20 different versions, some with an astounding choice of power options. As an example, the Turbo S and Turbo both take less than three seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60. And that takes care of the Audi R8 edging out the Porsche 911.
The Bottom Line
Very different approaches are taken by the 911 and the R8 in the representation of the standard formula for high-performance sports cars. The R8 is the definition of most modern supercars with its mid-engine layout and futuristic styling. But the Porsche has a rear engine layout and, true to its classic name and reputation, constantly evolving iconic styling.
Audi took great care to redesign the interior quality of their 2017 model adding high-quality materials and an attractive tech-laden atmosphere. But the Porsche 911 has been sporting an outstanding fit and finish with premium materials and a superior interior long before the Audi R8 took the hint and caught up.
Some may consider this comparison a tie, but the Porsche gets bonus points for doing things right the first time and sticking with what works.
