2018 Porsche 718 Cayman vs. 2018 Chevrolet Corvette

Owners of the 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman and the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette each own a magnificent specimen of automobile. Performance levels are extraordinary, exterior design is a magnificent sight, and both are big name items. Let’s take a closer look to see if one edges out the other.

Design & Style

The Porsche company And Chevrolet classify both of these vehicles as two seaters.

The 718 Cayman has been designed with fewer moving parts for better efficiency and smoother operation. The Corvette’s engine is somewhat old-school with a push rod design versus the 718 Cayman with its overhead cam design.

Other design differences in which the 718 Cayman wins out are as follows: automatically variable intermittent wipers, a rear wiper, headlight washers, cornering lights, power mirror controls, heated steering wheel, and adaptive cruise control.

Technology & Safety

Standard safety equipment in both vehicles consists of the following: review cameras, daytime running lights, skid prevention electronic stability systems, traction control, four-wheel antilock brakes, front seat belt pretension errors, side impact head airbags, front side impact airbags, and passenger and driver frontal airbags.

Offered exclusively by the 718 Cayman (and not the Corvette) are crash mitigation brakes, collision warning, and a system to review driver’s side blind spot objects.

Right off the bat, we notice a significant difference in miles per gallon; particularly in the city. The 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman gets 28 MPG on the highway and 21 MPG in the city. And though the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette does get 25 MPG on the highway, it drops to 16 MPG in the city. Possibly for this very reason the Chevrolet Corvette holds more gas (18.5 gallons) than does the Porsche Cayman (14.3 gallons).

The Porsche offers a tighter turning diameter at 36 feet curb to curb versus the 37.7 feet for the Corvette. You’ll notice a significant difference in the engine type as well. The Chevrolet Corvette simply has a gas V-8. With the Porsche 718 Cayman has an intercooled turbo premium unleaded H-4. Who doesn’t love turbo?

The Bottom Line

While simply tooling around town (maybe just to show off your awesome ride), doing it in the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette is going to make a pretty serious dent in your wallet. It’s not available in a turbo V-6, and (very sadly) the nice lines of this automobile are interfered with by the distracting body vents. Still, all in all, it’s a Vette – and for many – that’s enough. (Not for a Porsche owner of course.)

In a head-to-head reliability comparison from Consumer Reports, the Corvette was rated 32 points lower than the Porsche. The Porsche also outdid the Chevrolet in a similar study by JD Power and Associates regarding overall initial quality. And for long-term dependability, JD Power and Associates ranked the Chevrolet as considerably more problematic than the Porsche.
